home: the art of listening

A Seven-Day International Program Led by b e i n g – s o u n d & Giulia Gallina culminating in a Sound Installation & Performance at the Medieval Castle of Agios Georgios, Kefalonia Island, Greece.

The program is part of the First International Environmental Festival of Kefalonia.
Organized by the Ionion Center for the Arts & Culture.

In this program we will collectively practice listening, mindfulness, and creativity as ways of cultivating the experience of Home: a place of presence, of opening up, and deepening relationships with the self, with each other, with the environment, and with the beyond-human world.

Deliberately engaging our aural senses makes us become aware of where we are in a specific present moment and temporarily takes us away from the constant noise produced by our mind’s incessant stream of thoughts, attuning us to a meditative, sacred space where we can observe reality from a different point of view.

Each day, the participants will collect sounds through field recordings in various locations, including mountains, gullies, sea and land caves, ancient monuments, etc. Each day will have a theme of inquiry and reflection that will tie into the larger theme of HOME.

The program will culminate in a two-part public presentation:
● A group sound installation (using the field recordings)
● A performance at the Medieval Castle of Agios Georgios.

The installation will consist of sound devices distributed throughout the Castle which will play edited material from the field recordings. The piece will create an immersive and emergent sound environment.

a sound art project about women’s quest for freedom

voix invisibles

@yasstreet.1303

Giulia Gallina’s project Voix Invisibles (in collaboration with Cristina Italiani) has been selected by the Anna Lindh Foundation to promote the intercultural dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean region, and thanks to Association Agir Ensemble, Anna Lindh Réseau Maroc and Associação Cultural Luso-Grega “Parafonia”, she had the privilege to spend one month in Safi, Morocco and collaborate with incredible local musicians and artists.

The result of this collaboration has been a two-hour performance featuring women’s choir “Collectif Shérazade”, group of dancers “Historya” and musicians from the desert “Gnawa Bambara” that took places in several locations.

@yasstreet.1303

Voix Invisibles is conceived as a sound art performance in which the voices of women in all their nuances tell a journey towards the freedom to be, to exist, to express themselves.

The soundscape created by the recording of multiple voices of Mediterranean women, different in terms of age, language, culture and personal history, contributes to building a narrative in which multifaceted forms of expression and sounds intersect with the musical repertoire proposed by the artists and imagined to accompany the audience in the exploration of unknown territories inside and outside the human soul.

The intention of Voix Invisibles is to narrate, through sound, music and poetry, the often ignored or forgotten stories of women, each one carrying her own vision of freedom.

Against the backdrop of this vast linguistic and sound fabric, Voix Invisibles is an opportunity to reflect on the strength of women’s voices, the need to listen and the differences that unite the cultures of the Mediterranean.

an emerging musical group performing traditional mediterranean music

asteria

this ensemble began as a gathering of six women who embarked on a profound exploration of the ancient traditions prevalent in Mediterranean regions. their approach is deeply rooted in mysticism and ancestral traditions, utilizing a combination of songs, rituals, dances, atmospheric soundscapes, and ancient symbols.

asteria represents a symbolic sisterhood, embodying an ongoing journey of exploration and mutual support among women. their voices, woven together, illuminate the cyclical patterns inherent in life, the changing seasons, and the kaleidoscope of human emotions. Their contemporary perspective on the ancient feminine essence conjures powerful imagery of fearless self-expression, unity, and joyous celebration.

a sound art project

ancient
voices of
the island

the main purpose of this project has been to collect sounds that represent the island of Kefalonia, ranging from expressions from nature to human traditions, and to embed them in minimalist music compositions on piano and autoharp. this working approach is taken in order to create a meditative sound experience whose purpose is to bring out a voiced identity of the island through an “artistic repository of sounds”.

the soundscape that is evoked in this collection is intended to take inspiration from soundwalks, where our ears are progressively exposed to every sound around us and whose main objective is to stimulate an active listening experience in and to the surrounding environment.

in this performance, the sounds presented are specific to the island of Kefalonia and embrace a full range of landscape variations, going from rural to urban, from traditional to industrial, and are intentionally processed in order to create a sound art piece.

a piano + electro album

storm
factory

a Lisbon-based artistic project in collaboration with musician Rui Maia. a desire to develop a new aesthetic path born from the fusion of Giulia Gallina’s neoclassic and minimalist piano compositions with Rui Maia’s experimental and ambient electronics.

it is a dialogue between different universes, the search for a dreamy and cinematic soundscape where a sensory piano inspired by sea travels and ancient myths encounters a full set of industrial and unsettling sounds.

aesthetically reframed objects and materials come together as with completing a puzzle, drawn by the noises of cities, factories, people, water, abandoned houses and crushed leaves.

an indie-folk collective

the loafing
heroes

a cosmopolitan, morphing, dream-folk international band.
the project conveys a subversive idea of “loafing” (in slowness, wandering, and perhaps even as an art of living and seeing).

the band’s vision of entanglement, transformation and subversive joy responds to the technological overload and ecological catastrophe of our times.

podcast

zephiro

is a podcast that has been created, produced and released by Giulia Gallina. it is about travel literature and contains original music and sound effects, which are captured with special field recording equipment.

in each episode a travel book is narrated through voice and music, where the purpose is to inspire and motivate people to read and travel. the book selection is made according to the following criteria: alternative ways of traveling; spirit of adventure; inner transformation of the traveler; and getting out of their own comfort zone.

the music component of the podcast is of great importance, as ad hoc music has been composed for each episode, being inspired by the countries and characters appearing in the story. the sound design is specifically forged to accompany the travels to help create a unique listening experience.
