HOME: THE ART
OF LISTENING

A Seven-Day International Program Led by being–sound & Giulia Gallina culminating in a Sound Installation & Performance at the Medieval Castle of Agios Georgios, Kefalonia Island, Greece. Selected and funded by Culture Moves Europe.

The program is part of the First International Environmental Festival of Kefalonia. Organized by the Ionion Center for the Arts & Culture.

In this program we will collectively practice listening, mindfulness, and creativity as ways of cultivating the experience of Home: a place of presence, of opening up, and deepening relationships with the self, with each other, with the environment, and with the beyond-human world.

Deliberately engaging our aural senses makes us become aware of where we are in a specific present moment and temporarily takes us away from the constant noise produced by our mind’s incessant stream of thoughts, attuning us to a meditative, sacred space where we can observe reality from a different point of view.

Each day, the participants will collect sounds through field recordings in various locations, including mountains, gullies, sea and land caves, ancient monuments, etc. Each day will have a theme of inquiry and reflection that will tie into the larger theme of HOME.

The program will culminate in a two-part public presentation:

  • A group sound installation (using the field recordings)
  • A performance at the Medieval Castle of Agios Georgios.

The installation will consist of sound devices distributed throughout the Castle which will play edited material from the field recordings. The piece will create an immersive and emergent sound environment.
